How It Works

Steps to Becoming a Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii Partner Family:

  1. Read, initial and complete information packet.
  2. Complete Application for Housing.
  3. Information gathered includes a check of your credit, personal assets, proof of residency and income verification. We will also do reference checks and a criminal background check.
  4. Our family selection and building committees will review your application based on several criteria, including level of need, access to land, willingness to partner and ability to repay the loan.
  5. The board of directors will make final recommendations.
  6. You will receive a letter of acceptance or denial within 3 months.
  7. If selected as a Partner Family, a meeting will be scheduled with our staff or family support personnel to explain the program, sweat equity, etc.
  8. Remember, the entire process can take up to 2 years or longer. If you are interested, fill out an application today!

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
